The AGM is on Monday night, if you have any nominations for next year’s Board, please fill
out the attached form and send it to Secretary Kym before the meeting.  Last week’s programme
on the Snoezelen room at Harbourside Lodge was informative.  It is always good to get feedback
from a project the club has supported.  Having experienced the room’s benefits, I think it is
a great asset for our elderly.

enjoyable trip around Australia.

Our vocational trip to Collett’s pharmacy was very enlightening, thank you Glenn for taking the time

Meeting No. 3184 - Monday 3rd March 2008

President Jim Says

The conference at Swan Hill was well worth the trip. It was a down to earth no frills
conference that involved all and spread the Rotary message. Next year the conference will
be closer to home at Ballarat, so the distance excuse will not hold.
It would be great to see a good contingent there from Portland.
The "4 Amigos" may even make a guest visit.

Share Rotary, but more importantly enjoy!
President Jim Harpley

Announcements & Reports

President Jim:

President Jim reported that the Annual District Conference was very good, but not as many
people attended as at previous conferences due to the distance factor.  Rt John Barke also
commented that the conference was well worthwhile.

President Jim spent time with 15 inbound and 10 rebound exchange students.  He told the story of
one female rebound student from Ballarat who went to Japan.  She visited a bar where all the patrons
were naked and enormous, in contrast to the sombre & sobering visit to the Hiroshima Museum.

At the Conference, Portland received an honourable mention in the Preserve Planet Earth Awards.

presentation will be made soon in Portland when it can be arranged.

The mystery of the ‘white glove’ was revealed. It is a Scottish leap year custom whereby a woman may
ask a man to marry her. If he refuses, she may demand compensation.  A pair of white gloves accompanies
the compensation.

Rt Bob Menzel: Spoke about options for the proposed Cape Nelson Lighthouse visit:

The guided tour to the top of the Lighthouse normally costs $10 per person but is offered to us for $5.

Option1 A two-course meal at Isabella’s café at the lighthouse plus the tour - $32 (inc $5 for the tour).

Option 2 A meal at the Mac’s Hotel first $18. Then the tour $5 a total of $23

Option 3 Finger food at Isabella’s Café  $13 plus the tour $5 a total of $18

Proposed date for the visit is Monday 7th April.  Please indicate if you preferences to Bob.

Rt Michael Goldby:

Michael read a letter from drought relief committee.  A pamphlet was available at each table.

Rt Brian McCabe PE:

Brian announced that PP Kym Stock has accepted the position of Club Secretary for 2008/09.

Brian talked about matching grants and discussed a possible Rotary Project at a Zambian High School.
Due to the increase in student numbers from 600 to 1200 the classrooms need extending & flushing
toilets & water supply need to be installed. Cost is US $22,000. With matching grants and participation
from our 7 Rotary clubs the project can be completely funded.

More money needed for Polio Plus program to eliminate Polio worldwide. Rotary estimates each club worldwide
will need to contribute US $3000 to match Bill & Melanie Gates current dollar for dollar offer of US $100 Million.

Rt Jim Barke:

Murray to Moyne bike ride to take place shortly.  Money raised will be used to buy chairs for dialysis patients.
Donations $2 and over are tax deductible.

Meeting No. 3176 - Monday 17th December 2007

President Jim Says

It is Christmas time, this is not only the festive season but it marks the halfway
point in the Rotary year. Time flies when you are having fun, and was not last Monday fun.

This night was such a success, due to input from everyone.  A big thankyou to:  Frank
for his challenging Christmas trivia.  Roy for the poems, what would Christmas be without
Roy and his poems; Dale for a 3 minute talk to remember; Brian Murphy for so successfully
and painlessly extracting funds for Foundation from us; my co-host PE Brian McCabe for
helping run the show; to the members who donated the raffle prizes; and last but not least,
everyone else for participating in the true spirit of the evening.

I would also like to thank John and Pam, the set-up of the tables put you in the Christmas
spirit straight away.

I would like to wish all a safe and happy festive season and I look forward to the start of
the second half of the Rotary year with our next meeting on Monday 7th January 2008.

President Jim Harpley

Ara Blaker

Michael Lyons.

Three Minute Speaker

Dayle King spoke about Christmas. One definition “Christmas can be a mansion of many fine rooms
or a house of horrors”.   So many people are involved in so many things.  Retailers – traders –
services – Christmas parties – Christmas cards – Christmas letters – Christmas presents -
what for who. One can get lost in the process. Nevertheless a most amusing speech by our
Rotarian Dayle!

Chairman Bob Menzel introduced former Rotarian Peter Gracias -Business Development
Officer of the Port of Portland, who spoke to us about the coming of the “Ocean Patriot”
drilling rig, explaining the logistics of the visit and the reasons for the closing of
the Lee Breakwater.  Members were taken on a site visit to the Port of Portland.
This proved to be very informative.
Among the facilities explained to us were:

The log stack and the projected use of the site within the next year.

Hardwood chips – run by Graincorp.

lluka Mineral sands facility – and the importance of the need to keep the sands uncontaminated.

Softwood chip facilities – Auspine and Green Triangle and the great importance the
Japanese put on this commodity.

Berth 6 and the loading facility for the softwood chips.  Berth 6 is also used to
load livestock, ingots and other commodities as it is easily accessible.

Berth 5, which is favoured by shipping companies as it is more sheltered from the swells.
This is used for unloading phosphate rock among other things.

Paper pulp from Brazil is unloaded through the port – destination South Australia.

Grain Silos are now empty due to the drought.

Smelter Berth – used to unload Alumina, Petroleum Coke and Aluminium Fluoride,
which are transported to the smelter by covered conveyor.

Berth 2 is used to import liquid pitch and sulphuric acid.

‘Ironheart’ – the dredge being used to pump sand to Anderson’s Point.
Exports through the Port of Portland are expected to rise from currently 3 million tonnes
annually to over 7 million tonnes annually over the next 5 years with the major growth due
to the commencement of Blue Gum harvesting & sales in 2008/09.
The evening concluded with the viewing of a short promotional DVD at the ‘Missions to Seafarers’.
The CEO of the Port, Scott Patterson addressed the members and fielded questions.
An enjoyable supper was served.
