Rotanews for Meeting No. 3297 - Monday 9th August 2010

President Terry Says
It was a good night hearing firstly from Ian on his escapades in his youth in the top end, then running his jewellers business and ending with him joining Rotary,
this was then followed by our guest speaker Jon Dennis, a new business owner in Portland.  It is very hearting to hear that someone new to the area believes
that there is a lot of potential growth in Portland and is willing to buy a business and relocate their family to the best kept secret in Victoria, Portland!

As mentioned Andrew Jack is in Geelong Hospital waiting for an operation to clear blockages to his heart, while he is waiting and recovering, I’m sure he
would like to hear from Rotarians and would appreciate your calls.

We will be having another great night next Monday when we will be inducting a new member to our club, Steve Ellis, who is transferring from Ballarat East.

See you all there.

President Terry Hallett

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3296 - Monday 2th August 2010

President Terry Says

I’m encouraged by the robust discussion we had around my wearing the chain of office and members wearing their rotary pins!  And it appears that,
until I can think of a better idea, it looks like I’ll continue wearing the chain.  But be aware their will be further discussion on this subject!

On a more serious note as August is “Membership and Extension Month” I do encourage all Rotarians to wear their pins, if you can, while you are
out in the public eye, I’m sure like me you are all proud to be members of the club and I cannot think of a better way to advertise the club, that is so
quick and easy to achieve.

Please remember to pay your fees.

President Terry Hallett

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3295 - 26 July  2010

President Terry Says

I’m not sure of the outcome of the vote last week, re me wearing the chain of office, was strictly correct, I’ve got a distinct feeling that
it was rigged and that I was rail-roaded!  So expect more on this subject?

I hope all members are excited by the prospect of getting your hands dirty doing working bees at Cape Nelson; because the working
bees are soon to begin!  Our first job will be the replacement of old signs on the walking tracks as briefly mentioned by Peter during his presentation.

Have a great week but please “REMEMBER TO PAY YOUR FEES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE”

President Terry Hallett

===================================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3294 - 19 July  2010

President Terry Says

What an interesting presentation by Joy and Graeme.  It’s amazing what a small group of dedicated
and committed people can do and how they enrich our community.  It sounds like a fantastic event
for Portland which we can support.

I look forward to our next guest speaker from Parks Victoria next week who will provide information
on the walking tracks at Cape Nelson that the club is adopting as a community project.

Please remember we need you all to pay your membership fees as soon as possible so we can forward our
contribution to district.

President Terry Hallett

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3293 - 12 July  2010

President Terry Says

G’day everyone; another new member inducted last week this is a great start to the new year.

It was good to see a good turn up to Club Assembly and from the buzz of the conversation within the
committees and the lively participation in the brain storming session some great ideas have been produced.

Now starts the hard work of converting the ideas into action, resulting in great projects and plans for
the coming year.

Thank you all for your input!

See you next week.

President Terry Hallett

==============================================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3292 - 5 July  2010

President Terry Says

Hi Rotarians, what a wonderful start for the year, two new members inducted and another one,
Tony South, who will be inducted at next weeks meeting; what a great effort by the membership team.

As I am sure all of you are aware that it’s club assembly next week as I indicated at the changeover
meeting, we need to review what we currently do and see if there needs to be any changes and then look
at what needs to be done.

So everyone put your thinking hats on and let’s shake the tree and see what falls out.

Hopefully some great Ideas?

President Terry Hallett

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3291 - 28 June  2010

New President Terry Says

Well it’s done, the chain is removed and B2 is off and running after a great year.

The Changeover night was well attended with all having a good time, as always a lot
of work goes in to make things a success and my thanks goes to Nev, Kym and the staff at Sandilands.

Monday night we will be inducting two new members John Mylett and Dennis Hilder.

While it will be a hard act to follow I’m sure with everyone’s help we will have a great year.

President Terry Hallett

============================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3290 - 21 June  2010

President Brian Says

Thanks to John and Terry for putting together the Art Show Review Presentation.
I think we can “demystify” the Art Show organisation and enable members to gain a greater
sense of ownership and involvement by sharing out a lot of the tasks involved.
It also helps to share the blame if things go wrong!!!

Look forward to seeing you all at the Changeover Dinner.

President Brian Murphy
================================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3289 - 7 June  2010

President Brian Says

The aim of the Art Show discussion will be to put plans in place to ensure the high standard of
the show doesn’t drop off post Michael Lyons!!  We can’t expect John Sealey and a few non-rotarian
volunteers to carry the can in organising the event.  We are looking to share the load and give all
Rotarians the opportunity to be involved.

We are good at the set-up and pull down, but there is a lot of other work that goes on that needs
to be shared.

President Brian Murphy
===========================================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3288 - 31 May  2010

President Brian Says

Thanks to Brian McCabe for filling in again!!  Will be interesting to see if you can spot the
difference after my training odyssey.  Thanks also to Wayne and Terry for organising the mentoring session –
I am sure members will have learned something from it.

Thanks Rotarians.

President Brian Murphy

==========================================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3287 - 24 May  2010

President Brian Says

Welcome to our new members Lynne, Peter and Ian.  I hope your time in Rotary is enjoyable and
rewarding for you.  On the down side, Melva and Eileen have both tended their resignations and
John Barke has asked to be drafted to Rotary Club of Hamilton North!!  We wish them well for the
future and thank them for their contribution.

In order to get the best value from our Guest Speakers, I would suggest that we ask short questions,
rather than questions with a long preamble or make our own lengthy statements.

Thanks Rotarians.

President Brian Murphy

======================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3286 - 17 May  2010

President Brian Says

A big night coming up on Monday night!!!!  THREE (3) inductions in one night.  Ian Smyth, Peter Edwards,
and Lyn Jones will all be joining our Rotary Club.  This is a great result from the work put in recently
on our recruitment campaign.  That will make the new recruit tally this year a whopping 8 –
and we haven’t finished yet.  I hope we have a good attendance of members on Monday night to
welcome Ian, Peter and Lyn (and their other halves) into Rotary.

President Brian Murphy

===========================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3285 - 10 May  2010

President Brian Says

Well the rewards are starting to show for the work put into the Club in a Club project.
Ian Smyth will be inducted on the 24th and there will be more to follow.  Please make these
new members welcome as they join us.

Thanks to Roger Dundas and his program team for the flexible management of the
Guest Speakers roster.  The ability to take advantage of opportunities as they arise e
nsures we get the best value from this aspect of our program.

President Brian Murphy

===========================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3284 - 3 May  2010

President Brian Says

Some very encouraging signs that we will have some new recruits in the near future!  Exciting stuff.

Terry Hallett continues to represent Rotary on the Steering Committee for the Mens Shed Project.
The Board has approved sponsorship of $400 for set up costs.  Attached is an expression of interest
survey form that some members maybe interested in filling in and returning.  Either send it back to
Glenelg Shire as suggested on the form or return it to Terry Hallett who will pass it on.

President Brian Murphy

===================================================================

Rotanews for Meeting No. 3283 - 27 April  2010

President Brian Says

Well I think that went pretty well!!  We ended up with 14 prospective new members:
some with a high chance of joining, some 50:50, and some doubtful.  I was impressed with
the way members looked after our guests and made them feel welcome.  They all appeared
comfortable to sit and chat after the presentation part, which was great.
Thanks to Eileen and Tim for their presentations – telling it the way they see it, which
I thought went over very well.
Big special thanks to John Sealey and his helpers for the hours of organising that went
into bringing it all together.
We’ve got them hooked – now lets reel them in!!!

President Brian Murphy

===============================================================================

please process your apology in the normal way.  Remember – no charge and supper provided!!

President Brian Murphy

Due to the Monday being a public holiday, this won’t be a regular meeting, but all members are
encouraged to attend to help fly the flag.  More details on Monday night.

The other significant event is the commitment of the Club to the Great South West Walk maintenance
program at Cape Nelson.  This will be great for fellowship, public relations and sense of achievement.
Thanks to all members for this commitment.

President Brian Murphy

took us all on fanciful journeys, crossing many boundaries but always referring
to their IN FLIGHT MANUAL – THE FOUR WAY TEST.

Meeting No. 3267 - 7 December  2009

President Brian Says

Thanks to all those eager beavers who helped out with the working bees and
thanks to Neville and his team for the organisation.

A reminder to Board members that we have our monthly meeting this week.

President Brian Murph

Working Bee

As we approach Christmas a time to spend with family and friends with things neat
and tidy and nicely decorated, it was time for our club to lend a hand with a working
bee to help tidy up our town.  With shovel and spades, whipper snippers and grappling
hook attached to a long rope a willing team of Rotarians set about recovering shopping
trolleys and rusted metal objects from water ways near the Rotary Bridge at Fawthrop Lagoon,
rubbish was collected, whilst other cleaned edges, chipped weeds and cleaned up over grown
grass around the Rotary Bridge, leaving the area in a much tidier state than when we arrived.

Other Rotarians worked at cleaning up the Henty Bay foreshore, gathering rubbish, chipping
and cleaning weeds from edges, mowing lawned area in front of Yacht Club and whipper
snipped along the rough and dangerous rock work in front of the adjacent car park,
this section of the foreshore really needs some serious attention.

After the work was done a great barbecue dinner with Christmas pudding followed,
so thanks to all Rotarians and Tom Doherty for helping to make Portland a tidy place
for Christmas.

for $3,500, fattened up and sold for $9,800 giving us a $6,300 profit.  Many thanks
to the Rotarians who looked after the steers and Michael Goldby for his profit making
abilities.  Another eight steers have been purchased to start the process all over again.

John Sealey, informed the club that the Art Show is underway, with “envelope stuffing”
happening yesterday, resulting in 640 invitations to artists being sent today.
This is the 27th year the Show is being run and we are still attracting new members.
New sponsorship has been forthcoming this year, so two new categories have been established.
If there is any member who would like to contribute to the smaller prize money,
please contact John when he returns from holidays.

Great to see so many ideas generated by the various committees at Club Assembly.  Some routine
programs but also a few new ideas that can be explored.  The challenge is to now put these plans
into practise.  We don’t have to do it all in the first month, but we do need to make steady

Meeting No. 3246 - 13 July  2009

President Brian Says

Monday night will be our first Club Assembly for the new year.  Please check the attached Directory
to make sure you know which committee you are on!!  The aim for each committee will be to establish
a plan for projects for the coming year.  This should include previous successful projects and some
new options to make life more interesting.

President Brian Murphy

Announcements & Reports

President Brian opened the meeting “There are more important things than football”.  There will be a
Mental Health and Membership meeting after the club meeting tonight.  Club assembly next week, it is
important that members attend as this is the beginning of a new year, time to set up your committees
programs.  A Board Meeting will follow.  President Brian has a copy of an email from Minister Jennings
following the opening of the Trawler Wharf and praising the BBQ provided by the Rotary Club of Portland.

Rt Bob Menzel – NYSF candidate Jayden Stewart has reached $5,000 of the $9,000 needed to get himself to
Sweden at the end of the year.  Our 2009 candidate Phoebe Shepherd has made it to the final interview
in Ararat this weekend.

Mental Health Forum – Rt Roy Symes reported back on the Forum held last Wednesday at the Portland Arts Centre,
in a word, Thankyou.  He thanked all the club members for the time and effort they put into the event.
Especially the committee members.  From being put on the spot on the night with a job, or in the weeks
building up to the night.  He sees this as a benefit to the community and support for the group being formed.
Roy suggested that we promote the DVD of the forum to the community.  It is available at Lyons Newsagent
for $5 so they don’t miss out or to refresh their memory.

PDG Wayne Barrett spoke to the club about two things:
The viability of each club – how is each club coping with the effect of the economic downturn.  District
wants to know about the cost of membership in each club, how dues are calculated, meal costs and share
this information with other clubs to help keep the club viable.  They want to know is the cost of membership
a problem.

DGE Jesse Harmon is quoted as saying “Rotary is moving away from big jobs to big hearts”.  In other words
find the big hearts in your community, not necessarily the CEO of a company, but someone who wants to
participate in the community and you have a new Rotarian.  The Portland Rotary clubs are doing well
with greater retention rates than the average.  The average age of members in rotary is 70% above retirement age.
Club stats show that 80% of new members leave in 3 years, the other 20% will stay in rotary for 15 years or more.
Rotary Leadership Institute supported by DPG Cathy Roth, which is an opportunity for Club Presidents to
identify club leaders, not necessarily a future President by leaders within the club to attend courses which
will be held yearly.

=========================================================================================================

Meeting No. 3239 - 18 May  2009

Announcements & Reports

Past President Jim reported that Peter, Lex and Ian from the Eltham Rotary Club were promoting the
Aqua Box designed to provide essential items in disaster cases, but more importantly being able to
provide 78 litres of purified water after chloride treatment and filtration.  This innovative concept
providing all sorts of items from blankets to buckets, shelter to cooking and many other tools etc.
has already been used in some of our fire ravaged areas.

PP Jim then at great expense handed the evening to the Brown Brothers our local act who grasp the
opportunity to have a shot at anyone who stood in the way.  Tony Brown inflicted wounds where ever
he could and introduced various members to fine others for their misgivings.  Later in the evening
Dayle Brown assisted his twin Tony Brown (a bit like Darrell and his brother Darrell) in a quiz that
was too difficult even for the highly educated minds of the audience.

Incoming President Brian Murphy reported on the District Assembly held in Stawell, commenting on the
quality of the presentations and with facilitators being well trained.  The District Governors visit
to Portland is set for the 19th October and the district would like to see a 4% growth in membership
in the coming year.

To our enjoyment we were entertained by Roy Symes as he often has with a message in poetry entitled
Troubled Bluey.

All this without a meal wouldn’t be much chop, well with a big thanks to Elaine Doodt and her trusty
Chefs Apprentice Neville, a plan was hatched and the menu set, ably supported by junior trainees Peter Walsh,
Graeme Campbell and Roy Symes, we were presented with a hearty three course meal of soup, delicious roast
with well cooked vegetables and steamed pudding.  Well done and thank you.

Special mention, this was Rt Jo Koch’s last meeting with us, and PP Jim along with all of us wished Jo
all the best in the future with her move back to South Australia.  Jo we will miss you, your contribution
to Portland and our Rotary Club has been significant, you have been a friend to all of us.  Good health
and good luck, and we look forward to seeing you again.

May is Australian Rotary Health Research Fund month, a time when we think about how Rotarians and
Rotary Clubs can support this great Australian organisation.  The Club, with the support of ARHRF,
is holding a Mental Health Forum on July 8th.  This is a major club project which will hopefully
lead to a better awareness of these issues in our community and perhaps better support for those
in need of help in our community.

President Brian McCabe

Announcements & Reports

The Department of Sustainability and Environment has notified the club that the top section of steps
at Andersons Point will be dismantled.  Rt Marty Hayden enlarged on this.  The DSE has ignored correspondence
and personal approaches from local residents.  The fear is that what is planned by the DSE will make the
area more dangerous.

Rt Howard Barclay – who wears the membership chairman’s hat, emphasised to members that there is a procedure
which must be followed when proposing a new member.

Rt Brian Murphy PE – encouraged board members, especially new ones to attend the District Assembly on
Sunday 17th May at the Stawell Secondary College.  There are special sections for members to attend,

Roy Symes RE: the Mental Health Forum set for the 8th July that all is progressing well with invitations
having been sent out and he is seeking a carer who has been involved in this area who would be suitable
as a speaker.  If you can help with an idea Roy would appreciate you contacting him.  Remember as we move
closer to the forum it is important that as many people as possible attend as it covers a broad spectrum
and as many as one in five of us need support and help with this health problem.
