President Peter welcomed all to the meeting, President Malcolm and 7 members of the Rotary Club of Portland Bay joined us tonight.  As PP Bev said this was a good idea at this time of the year when both clubs suffer from the “nomads going north syndrome”. Both clubs will have turns running the meetings and some will be on Wednesday morning.  So, stay tuned to your club’s bulletins.

PP Bev did the clubs invocation, apologies /LOA  and club announcements for Portland Bay.  Next week we are here @ the Mac’s then the following week the clubs meet on Wednesday morning @ the SES rooms.
PP Frank – the first Art Show meeting is next Thursday 24th August, 5.15pm @ Portland Bowls Club.  Come along if you have something to share about how the show should be presented, - any & everything is up for change.

Our guest speaker tonight was Tracy Jensen, was interviewed “Parky” style by Pres. Peter she is here this time to talk about her work as a Project Facilitator with GSGLLEN, doing Cert II in Active Volunteering with the re-engagement students of Portland.   Tracy uses her contact with Rotary’s sandwich program to have the students come along and make the sandwiches as part of their need to do 20hrs of volunteering.  Tracy gave examples of how some of the students have grown since taking part in the program.  They all voted that is the best volunteering project – maybe it’s the time spent with the Rotarians there and the intergenerational conversions that happen
.
The students also spend time at different industries, helping to develop work skills and open them up to the different vocations available.  Tracy is very proud of her 100% attendance on the day of all the students, which is way ahead of mainstream schools.  The re- engagement program is auspiced by the Portland Secondary College and is run out of a house in town owned by the Port of Portland, it is for the students who have left school or find it difficult to function well in mainstream schools.  This can be a pathway for them to go back to school or find employment.
SayNo2familyviolence meeting held 10.08.2023.
1.       Evaluation of SN2FV round from 22/08/23- came together well –thank you to both clubs for support on the day – “blue tape” support with players coincided with TAC blue sash event – win-win – consideration for public who self- report/disclose at events – information to clubs, - could improve local media output – sparse coverage for the day – otherwise good.
2.       Meeting TOR updated.
3.       Annual plan review
4.       Planning: 16 days of activism (25/11/23 – 10/12/23) breakfast and walk on Saturday 25th November – for collaboration with schools. Funding received – will need club support and hands on deck for event.
5.       Planning for a combined meeting with focus on sayNO2familyvolence – with appreciation to groups and community for involvement. TBC

PP John Pye spent today at school with students from the Portland Secondary College at the Warrnambool Science and Technology Challenge, there were also teams from Hamilton and Warrnambool, which is held at Deakin University, run by the University of Newcastle. The day was well supported by Rotary clubs for Portland, Hamilton & Warrnambool.
The teams had challenges in science, maths & technology.  In the Big Bridge challenge Portland was the winner when the bridge withstood the increasing weights.  Overall Portland Secondary College came in second.  PP John promoted the Andrew Jack Scholarship while over there.
