Rotary Club of Portland 81st birthday celebration.

Lets celebrate - we are 81 years young!
Message from Suren Poruri - Regional Chairman - Grants RI District 3150 wishing our club a very happy birthday and this has prompted and celebratory cake of the occasion

Memories from our past Presidents
  • PP Dayle King - DG at the time felt there should be two clubs in the town and discussion created a stir amongst many members - "lets give it a go" and as a result the Rotary club of Portland Bay was born. Also as Art Show - started as an Arts and Craft show and changed subtly over time.
  • PP John Pye - focus on youth during presidency with strong exchange program; also invited all clubs in the region to meet and each club spoke about their programs for ten minutes- afternoon session and nearly 100 people attended.
  • PP Bob Hampshire - always wore suit and and ties to the meetings, good thing that has changed! - roughly 54 members at the time
  • PP Bob Menzel - Trying to find somewhere to hold all the Rotary gear which was extensive, Lions and Apex working together for shedding and this was sorted eventually; over 90 people attending the changeover event - fond memories of the event.
  • PP Peter Simons - minor changes - celebrated club birthday on our birthday, Inga was exchange student and Regan was born in this year, (busy year) around 40 members and we did alot of things back then - maybe we were younger back then??

Rotary Hours:  Again a plea from PP Veryan that all hours put in by yourself on behalf of the club be forwarded to her for collating.  Volunteer hours help when we are applying for a District Grant - it shows the District Committee that our club is active in the community.

District Conference:
For those who were unable to go to the District 9780 conference - here are some photos from the event - https://rotary9780.org/photoalbums/district-conference-2023-ballarat/

PP Peter Simons: Polio Park run event on Saturday 15th April.
Overall a success with information resources shared with those present and small presentation before a 5km walk, jog, run - Past member and polio survivor Dawn Baudinette - our Ambassador for Polio was present as well as polio survivor Brian Lineker who ran the course. Dawn spent approx. 6 years in an "iron lung" machine from 18 months of age, and Brian spent years in callipers to assist with walking. The effect on families and communities was significant with people and families forced to stay away from work, school and their community in case polio was spread. Listen to Dawn speak of her experience her - https://www.facebook.com/RotaryClubOfPortlandInc/videos/2098715280281132
Numbers were down for parkrun - perhaps due to the weather, however well advertiser through local Facebook and media with great article prior to the event.

District notices

The annual District Assembly is the major leadership training event in each Rotary District of the
world. The sessions aim to offer motivation, inspiration, Rotary information and new ideas for Club. Officers, Directors, and other Rotarians. Peter Taylor is encouraging the incoming Board & Directors to attend, and newer members of each Club should be encouraged to attend to help them learn more about Rotary. Check out District Website or Weekly Travel Guide.

Our Rotary family is important to us.
COVID and respiratory infections are still about and increasing with the cooler weather -  take care and consider a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) if feeling unwell. There are some new guidelines about vaccinations so check with your GP or pharmacist for more information and stay up to date!
