If you weren't ready for it - Here it is!!  Welcome to 2023!

All of a  sudden we have turned over into a new year and such a positive one to come! Thank you to all the members who have been actively involved in the club over the last 6 months - taking on the role as president is a commitment I have leaned into this year, and not without much learning along the way! However it is the passion of the members that really makes the difference between an ordinary year/activity to a sensational one - and with that- I look forward to the next 6 months.

We are preparing for our transition to the capable leadership of Peter Taylor, who is already showing he is prepared to "get on with it" and encourage our members along the way.

The Rotary club of Portland have lots of activities in the next two months - so if you are able to help out, make sure you make it known!

Peter Gracias will be circulating a membership survey shortly, as planned, to review the schedule of our meetings - so make sure you complete this when it comes through, so we can move forward positively.

Reminders:

Community Service activities:
Please contact Ian by phone directly in preparation for this weekend, to confirm your assistance. Two very worthy causes that need support around their beach activities, given the recent news events. We need at least 4 people each day and sharing the load will make sure it is enjoyable for all.

Membership fees  -
  • Thank you to members who have already paid
  • Membership is recorded and paid for on 1st July and 1st January (for half yearly payment members) therefore payment is required as soon as possible.
Our family evening in the Botanical gardens next Monday 9th January - a great opportunity to bring extended family if they are visiting and have a stroll through our historical gardens

Our website:

I have been updating some information to our clubs web page so we remain relevant in our community (there is still much to do) - have a look, get your family to have a look - What else do you want to see?

Casual get together - Lets enjoy!
Casual get together - Lets enjoy!

Weather permitting - we will meet in the Botanical Gardens in Glenelg street Portland, in front of the curators cottage -BYO, Bring a chair/small table, and a plate of food to share.

If it turns really windy or wet - we will transfer to the shed. Be prepared for a few games!

In 1850 an area of approximately 30 acres bounded by Glenelg Street, Bentinck Street and Salt Creek was set aside as a reserve for a botanical garden. In September 1857  Curator of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens appointed Alexander Elliott the task of setting out the gardens and paths and in June 1858 Council had appointed the first curator, William Allitt. The gardens were opened to the public in early 1859. Portland’s Botanic Gardens are the second oldest in Victoria.
